Best Practice Regulation

The Government’s regulatory policy requirements assist it in keeping the Australian economy as efficient, flexible and responsive as possible. Good policy making processes can ensure that public policy achieves a desired objective in a cost-effective manner.

The Australian Government Guide to Regulation outlines the Australian Government’s requirements for regulatory impact analysis to guide government entities in developing Regulation Impact Statements.

The Regulatory Burden Measurement framework is used to calculate the regulatory costs of current or proposed policies or regulation.

We have prepared guidance for policymakers to draw on in implementing the Government’s regulatory reform priorities and to support them in developing Regulation Impact Statements, including for the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).

The role of the Office of Best Practice Regulation (OBPR)

The OBPR assists policymakers to comply with the Government’s regulatory impact analysis requirements. It assesses Regulation Impact Statements and Post-Implementation Reviews and prepares regular compliance reports.

It also publishes Regulation Impact Statements and Post-implementation reviews on the Best Practice Regulation Updates website.
