Public Data Initiatives
We are responsible for a number of public data initiatives, including the initiatives detailed below.
Open Data 500 Australia
We are coordinating Australia’s partnership with The GovLab at New York University to conduct the Open Data 500 Australia. This is the first study of Australian companies and non-government organisations that use open government data to generate new business, develop new products and services, and create social value.
ANZLIC – the Spatial Information Council
We provide secretariat support for ANZLIC – the Spatial Information Council which is the peak intergovernmental organisation providing leadership in the collection, management and use of spatial information in Australia and New Zealand.
The Foundation Spatial Data Framework
Spatial data is information that identifies the geographic location of features and boundaries on Earth. These may include natural or constructed features, mountain ranges, oceans, and more. Spatial data is commonly represented by numerical values or geographic coordinates.
The Foundation Spatial Data Framework provides a standard for gathering, maintaining and standardising spatial data in Australian and New Zealand. The framework is designed to serve the widest possible range of users. It includes addresses, administrative boundaries, place names, land parcels and properties, expanses of water, and other data categories.
The Foundation Spatial Data Framework is sponsored by the Australia New Zealand Land Information Council – the Spatial Information Council. It will deliver an authoritative source on the highest quality and most up-to-date foundation spatial data.
DataStart is a public-private partnership to foster data-driven innovation. The initiative focuses on Australian tech start-up companies who can apply innovation and creativity to solve global problems.
DataStart gives these companies the chance to develop sustainable business solutions by accessing open (publicly available) government data.
We have engaged Pollenizer Pty Ltd as the established Australian incubator to support DataStart. ‘Startup science’ is Pollenizer’s incubation methodology. Startup Science is a scalable and repeatable way to incubate and transform ideas into proven business models.
To make DataStart a success, the Australian Government has partnered with a number of large organisations. These include Optus, Google, PwC Australia, CSIRO’s Data61, Rozetta, and the Australian Information Industry Association.
Open Government Partnership
We coordinate Open Government Partnership (OGP) activities for the Australian Government. In consultation with the public we are helping to develop Australia’s National Action Plan.
The Australian Government has committed to finalise its OGP membership. The Government is committed to accountability and transparency, citizen engagement, and digital innovation and transformation. Openness is a basic principle of modern government.
Other Australian Government data initiatives
Geoscience Australia hosts the National Map which provides access to spatial data held by all levels of government in Australia. The National Map is designed to help with the use of public data. The National Map is an open resource the public can use to visualise geospatial data, such as some of the datasets available on data.gov.au. This can give valuable insights and help users better understand datasets, and also create new applications and business entities.
The Analytics Space is a prototype platform provided by the Data Analytics Centre of Excellence which is run by the Australian Taxation Office. It is a space to build analytics capability across government. The public areas on the platform offer information about the use of data analytics by the government to provide better services.
Additional private services are provided to government employees who are working with data and analytics:
- a forum – using Askbot
- software repository – using Redmine
- wiki – using MediaWiki
- mailing list manager – using GNU Mailman
These government-only services require a login from an Australian Government email address.
