Dr Martin Parkinson delivers the 8th Dungala Kaiela Oration

On 17 August, Dr Martin Parkinson delivered the 8th Dungala Kaiela Oration, which aims to celebrate Aboriginal cultural identity, create a shared vision for the people of the greater Goulburn Murray region, and build bridges to promote Aboriginal social and economic development.

The Dungala Kaiela Oration ‘Defining Goulburn Murray’ is an annual event co-hosted by the Kaiela Institute and the University of Melbourne held in Shepparton, Victoria. The Orations have rolling themes examining culture, climate change, economics and regional development, legal issues, health and society.

Introduced by Justin Mohamed, CEO of Reconciliation Australia, Dr Parkinson’s address reinforced the Government’s desire for a new partnership with Indigenous Australians and a move away from policy that does things to Aboriginal people, to policy that does things with Aboriginal people. He also called on Indigenous leaders and organisations and governments to work together to carve out the future we want for all Australians.
