Statement by the Secretary - Records of Treasury and Finance Briefings
RECORDS OF BRIEFING OF INDEPENDENT MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT BY THE SECRETARIES OF THE DEPARTMENTS OF THE TREASURY AND FINANCE AND DEREGULATION
A press article published today makes reference to ‘minutes’ of the briefing provided by the Secretaries of the Departments of the Treasury and Finance and Deregulation to independent members of the House of Representatives.
Consistent with the Guidelines for Post Election Briefings of Independent Members agreed by the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition, the Government and Opposition were provided an opportunity to be briefed about the written advice proposed to be given to the independents before Secretaries met with them last week and then to be briefed about matters relating to their policies that had been discussed in the meeting with the independent members.
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet prepared written records of the meeting as a basis for feedback to the Government and Opposition, with each party receiving the particular record that related to its respective policies, or areas of overlapping policies. Copies of the records for both the Government and the Opposition were also provided to each of the independent members.
In order to avoid misinformed speculation about the content of these records, they are being released publicly following notification to the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and the independent members.
