National Security Statement - 4 December 2008

On 4 December 2008, the Prime Minister delivered to Parliament Australia’s inaugural National Security Statement (NSS) and released the summary and conclusions of the Report of the Review of Homeland and Border Security conducted by Mr Ric Smith AO PSM. 

The NSS articulates the security challenges facing Australia and the government’s national security principles, interests and priorities.  The Review of Homeland and Border Security examined the roles, responsibilities and functions of departments and agencies involved in homeland and border security and made recommendations to the Australian Government regarding possible changes to Australia’s national security structure and culture to optimise the coordination and effectiveness of Australia’s national security efforts.
