Statement by the Secretary - 29 August 2008
STATEMENT BY THE SECRETARY
DEPARTMENT OF THE PRIME MINISTER AND CABINET
On 29 May 2008 I advised that I had asked the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to undertake an investigation into the unauthorised disclosure of Cabinet material. The AFP has now completed its investigation and provided me with its final report.
The AFP identified and interviewed a number of Ministerial Staff and APS officers across Departments who had access to the documents. The investigation has concluded that there is insufficient evidence at this time to prosecute any person for the unauthorised disclosure of the information, or for any disciplinary action under the Australian Public Service Act.
The AFP has made a number of recommendations to improve the security of cabinet material. The Cabinet Division of my Department will be putting in place a range of additional security measures and improved education and training for Ministerial staff and APS officers on their responsibilities for handling Cabinet material.
