The Caretaker period and pre-election consultation period

The Guidance on Caretaker Conventions 2013 (the Guidance) is now available on the PM&C website at Guidelines and Procedures.  As set out in paragraph 1.2 of the Guidance, the caretaker period will commence once the House is dissolved and continues until the election result is clear or, if there is a change of government, until the new government is appointed.

There are also Guidelines for pre-election consultation with the Opposition, which have been in place since 1976.  The current version of the Guidelines, presented to the Senate in 1987, is reprinted in the Guidance.

The Guidelines are distinct from the caretaker conventions and commence on a different date.  In 2013, the date for the commencement of pre-election consultation period is 27 June 2013.  That date is three months before the expiry of the House of Representatives.

Departments that have queries involving the caretaker period or related matters can consult the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet on 02 6271 5399.
