Nomination Panel for ABC and SBS Appointments

In accordance with section 24F(4) of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983, the Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Dr Ian Watt, has appointed the following members of the Nomination Panel for appointments to the boards of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS):

Mr Ric Smith AO PSM has been appointed as Chair of the Nomination Panel for a period of two years until 25 March 2015.  Mr Smith was appointed as Australia’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2009. He is a former Ambassador to China and to Indonesia and a former Secretary of the Department of Defence.  Mr Smith was named as an Officer in the Order of Australia in 1998, and was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2003.

Mr David Gonski AC has been appointed as a member for a period of two years until 25 March 2015.  Mr Gonski has been Chancellor of the University of New South Wales since 2005 and is chairman and director of a number of major companies and organisations including the Future Fund. He was Chairman of the Australia Council from 2002 to 2005. Mr Gonski was appointed as a Companion in the Order of Australia in 2007.

Professor Allan Fels AO has been appointed as a member for a period of one year until 25 March 2014.  Professor Fels was Dean of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) from 2003 to 2012 and following his retirement as Dean is currently Professor of Government at ANZSOG. He was Chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission from 1995 until 2003.  Professor Fels is the inaugural Chair of the National Mental Health Commission. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in June 2001.

Ms Leneen Forde AC has been appointed as a member for a period of one year until 25 March 2014. Ms Forde has been Chancellor of Griffith University since 2000 and was Governor of Queensland from 1992 to 1997. Ms Forde was appointed a Companion in the Order of Australia in 1993.

The Nomination Panel was established to:

  • conduct a selection process for non-executive Members and Chairpersons to the Boards, based on the principle of merit and having regard to the selection criteria provided by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy; and
  • provide the Minister with a written shortlist of at least three recommended candidates for each vacancy with a comparative assessment of the recommended candidates.
  • The panel is assisted in carrying out these functions by a secretariat within the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Broadband and, as required, a recruitment firm.
  • Mr Smith, Professor Fels, Mr Gonski, and Ms Forde were members of the previous Nomination Panel which conducted five appointment processes resulting in the appointment of 14 new directors to the ABC and SBS boards since 2009.
