Elliott and Daniella Crowder decided to sell their successful restaurant business in Grants Pass, after seven years ownership, and buy The Bike Shop in Newport. It was partly because of their business goal to earn financial security and it was partly because of their life passion. Living and working in a small town creates special challenges for business growth. A national tire service franchise decided to expand their operation into a neighboring small town by opening a new retail store. One big challenge was that an independent service provider, who purchased significant amounts of tires from the franchise business, dominated the local market. Because of trust and a long-time personal relationship, both parties were confident that the new business expansion would be done in the "old fashioned" way, fair to everyone concerned. After discussions with the SBDC advisor, an offer to purchase the business was structured and accepted. It was crafted in a way that benefited both the parties involved.
The final outcome was that the SBDC client was able to structure a transition arrangement where they purchased the small town business and leased the existing service facility until their new retail tire center was constructed. The former owner moved on to a more rewarding job. By making sure that everyone was treated fairly, the SBDC client purchased real "good will." This smooth step-by-step process gave the local patrons uninterrupted service, continued fair pricing, and the addition of a new member and partner to the community.
