Deschutes Concrete Construction opened in 2005 with the mission of family owners Matt, Gina, Garett, and Kristin Floyd, to be “as solid as the concrete they pour.” Over the last six years, they have accomplished that mission over several diverse construction projects and have grown sales by 600%. One of their most visible projects is the Highway 97 Wildlife Crossing, which is part of the Lava Butte Bridge project set to be completed this summer.
In January 2010, the Floyds enrolled in the Small Business Management program offered through the COCC Small Business Development Center. In an effort to expand their business knowledge, the family was pleased to find that such an affordable program existed for Central Oregon business owners. For the Floyds, the program was an “eye opening experience.”
Since its inception, Deschutes Concrete Construction has expanded its services from operating only in Central Oregon to now being statewide. In the near future, the Floyds hope to take advantage of their other recently acquired state licenses to continue expanding their market. Ultimately, the overall goal is to continue their success through further growth of sales, job creation, and efficiency of operations. In addition, the company is always working hard to align with the latest safety regulations and employee training methods to ensure it is continuing to perform at the highest industry levels.
Partnership with the SBDC The Floyd’s participation in COCC’s SBM program made it possible for them to take a step back and look at the areas of their business that needed extra attention. They took advantage of quality training and adopted a more detailed and effective approach in employee relations and management, while also gaining a better awareness of their financials.
Kristin Floyd says: “Working with the Small Business Development Center was the equivalent to going out and hiring a professional firm to take a fine-tooth comb to our business, but for a fraction of the cost. We were able to find the areas that needed help, how to address those areas, and were even connected to other professionals that could assist us. I would highly recommend the SBDC to anyone looking to grow and manage a successful business.”
