Announcing and presenting awards

Awards in the Australian system of honours are announced at various times of the year:

  • Australia Day (26 January)
  • The Queen's Birthday (June)
  • Australian Bravery Decorations announcements in April and August

Award ceremonies

Recipients of some awards in the Australian honours system are invited to receive the insignia of their awards at investiture ceremonies.

The Governor-General, state Governors and the Administrator of the Northern Territory conduct the ceremonies. If appropriate, Australian ambassadors and high commissioners carry out ceremonies overseas.

The ceremonies typically take place in April/May and September/October each year. They are held at Government House in Canberra and in each state and Territory capital.

Occasionally, special ceremonies are held. One example is the investiture ceremony for award recipients honoured for their bravery or outstanding service after the 2002 Bali Bombings.

Live Streaming of Investiture Ceremonies is available on the Governor-General’s website.
