On 19 October 2011, the Governor-General approved an amendment to the Administrative Arrangements Order transferring responsibilities for privacy and freedom of information policy from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to the Attorney-General’s Department.  The Privacy and Freedom of Information Policy Branch within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has transferred to the Attorney-General’s Department as the Information Law and Policy Branch.  Relevant parts of this webpage and its contents will shortly be updated and relocated to the website of the Attorney-General’s Department (www.ag.gov.au).

FOI Requests

This page outlines general information about making request to other departments and agencies. For requests specific to PM&C please refer to FOI request to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

In general terms, to make an FOI request you should:

  1. Identify the documents you want and which federal government agency is most likely to hold them.  Agencies have special FOI officers who can assist you in making your request, and their contact details are given here.
  2. Write out the request giving as much information as you can about the documents you want (for example, give a file number, a reference to a newspaper report about it or describe the subject matter in which you are interested) and give an address in Australia where correspondence can be sent to you.  Some agencies have special forms for making requests.  A Sample Application Form is available but you do not have to use it.  You can just write a letter.
Sample Application Form: Word 25KB | PDF 18KB
  3. Post or deliver your request to the agency.

Further information is available from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner .
