The 29th Australian Government Community Cabinet was held at Yeronga State High School in Yeronga, Queensland on the evening of Thursday 1 September 2011. This was the sixth Community Cabinet meeting held in Queensland. The Community Cabinet program commenced with 34 one-on-one meetings between ministers and members of the public, followed by a Community Reception where various local issues were discussed by ministers with members of the public. At the conclusion of the Community Reception approximately 350 community members attended the Public Forum with the Prime Minister and Ministers who participated in a question-and-answer session.
Music was provided by the Yeronga State High Concert Band to entertain the public during the Community Reception and refreshments were provided by hospitality students from the school. The community were welcomed to the Public Forum by the Principal of Yeronga State High School, Mr Terry Heath and the Welcome to Country was delivered by local Yuggera Man, Mr Shannon Ruska. Senior school student Jay Davies sang the Australian National Anthem with the music provided by the Yeronga State High Concert Band.
The Public Forum was opened by the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, where she spoke of Australia being a prosperous and peaceful nation that pulls together in difficult times. The Prime Minister highlighted aspects of her Government’s reform agenda, referring specifically to the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the aged-care reform package. She also stressed the importance of pricing carbon and delivering the National Broadband Network.
The Prime Minister and her Ministers fielded a wide range of questions from the community including topics such as Palestinian statehood, recognition of Indigenous Australians in the Constitution, the war in Afghanistan, cluster munitions, carbon pricing and asylum seekers.
