-
The Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities holds a one-on-one meeting with community members.
The Australian Government held its 27th Community Cabinet meeting on the evening of Thursday 19 May 2011 at The Heights School in Adelaide, South Australia. This was the fourth Community Cabinet meeting held in South Australia. The Community Cabinet meeting commenced with 40 one-on-one meetings between individual ministers and members of the public, followed by a Community Reception where Ministers mingled and discussed various local issues with members of the public. At the conclusion of the Community Reception around 309 community members attended a public question-and-answer session with the Prime Minister and Ministers.
Music students from The Heights School entertained the public during the Community Reception and refreshments were provided by the school catering staff and students. The Principal of the school, Helen Calvert, then welcomed the community to the Public Forum. Mr Lewis O’Brien, Kaurna Elder, delivered the Welcome to Country, and Ms Olivia Brownsey sang the Australian National Anthem.
The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, opened the forum by reflecting on her childhood in South Australia and spoke of the impact it had on her values and approach to government. Ministers spoke of their recent engagements in Adelaide and highlighted Government programs underway in South Australia. The Prime Minister spoke of the recent Federal Budget, outlining the tough decisions made by the Government, whilst conveying the Government’s commitment to providing all Australians with the opportunity to get a job and experience the dignity of work.
The Prime Minister and Ministers then answered questions from the floor in the public forum. As has been the case at previous Community Cabinet meetings, these questions covered a wide range of issues. They included the My School website, National Disability Insurance Scheme, sending asylum seekers to Malaysia, investing in renewable energy and the impact of tariffs on the local automotive industry.
