A Community Cabinet meeting was held at Kingston High School in Kingston, Tasmania, on Monday 3 October 2011. The meeting was the fourth occasion a Community Cabinet meeting has been held in Tasmania and marked the 30th Community Cabinet meeting held by the Australian Government.
The evening commenced with 39 one-on-one meetings providing the opportunity for direct communication and engagement between ministers and members of the public. At the conclusion of the one-on-one meetings, a Community Reception was held. Refreshments were provided by catering students from the Kingston High School and musical entertainment provided by the Kingston High School band. At the conclusion of the Community Reception, the Prime Minister and the attending Ministry, joined over 280 members of the local community for a question and answer session in the school auditorium.
The national anthem was sung by school students, Harriet Brinkhoff and Zoe Cooney followed by an impressive didgeridoo performance by Nick Osborn.
The Prime Minister opened proceedings remarking on the historic $8 million forestry agreement, the strength of the Australian economy, the NBN and the Minerals Resource Rent Tax whilst emphasising the importance of putting a price on carbon and investing in skills and jobs for the future.
The local community asked a number of questions on a wide variety of topics ranging from local issues like the forestry agreement and a hydro pool for Franklin and national issues like the carbon pricing, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, support for autism services and reducing the national road (death) toll.
