Document Summary

The Australian Government Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet provides support to the Prime Minister and works to achieve a coordinated approach to the development and implementation of government policies.

This annual report details the department’s activities during the 2003–04 financial year and is in eight parts.

In the Secretary’s review, the head of the department, Dr Peter Shergold, reports on the year’s activities.

The year in pictures provides some photographic highlights of the department’s activities.

The chapter on overviews looks at the structures of both the department and the six agencies comprising the Prime Minister’s portfolio. It also provides a summary of the department’s operational and financial performance.

A separate chapter on performance reports in detail on each of the department’s four output groups and rates their performance against their performance targets.

The chapter on management and accountability reports on the department’s approach to corporate governance, the management of its resources and how it fulfils its statutory obligations.

The appendixes give detailed information on staffing and other data, including consultancies, required by legislation to be included in the annual report.

The audited financial statements account for the money allocated to the department by the Parliament.

The reference section includes an alphabetical subject index, a compliance index and a glossary.

In addition, a help section explains how to navigate through this online report, how to download and print the report, and information about its accessibility.
